Dolls headed to the Boot, Betties and Gores rematch in Semi Finals

And there it is! For the first time ever, the Death Track Dolls have swept the regular season and will be making an appearance in Battle for the Boot – and boy did they earn it this year. Their competition will be decided Saturday May 25th when the Gore-Gore Rollergirls and the Smoke City Betties meet in the ToRD semi finals – tickets will be on sale soon. Also making their 2013 debut at the semi finals will be this season’s fine crop of D-VAS! They will be opening up the night with a bout against the South Simcoe Rebel Rollers.

Saturday night opened up with the Chicks Ahoy challenging the Gore-Gore Rollergirls. Both teams were missing key players who were away in Cincinnati playing with CN Power (keep reading for more details), and the Chicks were suffering injuries to their core jammer rotation. The Gores dominated the game from the start and amassed a pretty large lead early in the first half, which they would extend in the second, though the Chicks made them work for each point.

Final score: Gore-Gore Rollergirls 323 – 75 Chicks Ahoy

Following, the Death Track Dolls and Smoke City Betties hit the track. The opening half of the game was very tight, until the Dolls capitalized on Betties jammer penalty trouble to open up a lead. The game continued to be fast paced and hard hitting, each team trying to one up the other with strategy. In the end, the depth of skill the Dolls have shown this year shone true, and they took home the game to close out an impressive unbeaten season.

Final score: Death Track Dolls 265 – 63 Smoke City Betties

RogersTV was at the Bunker and filmed both bouts – tune in to RogersTV cable 10/63 on May 18th at 8pm for Gores vs. Chicks, and on May 19th at 8pm for Betties vs. Dolls.

Outside of Toronto, CN Power (#49) was busy taking on the #38 ranked Cincinnati Rollergirls in their home venue. Steadily working their way up the WFTDA rankings chart, CN Power is on the cusp of breaking into the Division 1 list, and their drive and determination showed in the tight and exciting game on Saturday night.

Final score: Cincinnati Rollergirls Black Sleep 217 – 188 CN Power.

Last Regular Season Bout!

This coming Saturday May 11th sees ToRD’s last regular season bout of 2013. The outcome of these two games determines who goes straight to the Battle for the Boot, and who will meet in the semi finals.

The Chicks Ahoy and the Gore Gore Rollergirls will open up the evening. Historically this has been an excellent match up; the Chicks and Gores have met at Battle for the Boot the last 3 years in a row. Following that game, the Death Track Dolls and the Smoke City Betties hit the track. Fresh from their 3rd place finish at Beast of the East, the Dolls are riding high on a string of victories this year.

Doors at 5pm, first game at 6pm, second game at 8pm. Follow the event on Facebook to learn more, and for your chance to win tickets. Hit up the Velvet Underground after the game for the official ToRD after party!

Saturday is also a big game for CN Power (Flat Track Stats #37), who are traveling to the US to take on the Cincinnati Rollergirls (Flat Track Stats #32). If you happen to be in that area, you can find out more about the game here.

Games 3 and 4 Results – Wowee!

It was an exciting Saturday night in the Bunker as fans packed in to watch the Chicks Ahoy vs the Smoke City Betties, and the Death Track Dolls vs the Gore Gore Rollergirls. It would also be a historic night, as both match ups had heavy one-sided win ratios for the Chicks and Gores in the past.

The Chicks and Betties were first on the track, and opened up with a tense first 10 minutes as the teams traded points back and forth, neither being able to open up a lead. However, capitalizing on a series of penalties for the Chicks, the Betties began to pull away for a lead that the Chicks would not be able to regain.

Final Score: 229 Smoke City Betties – 95 Chicks Ahoy.

With both teams coming into the game with strong victories in games 1 and 2, no one could predict what would happen in the Gores and Dolls bout. Even if they had, they likely still would have been surprised. The Dolls amassed a huge lead on the Gores right out of the gate; a lead which the Gores would fight to close, but were unable to surpass, despite an exceptionally strong and exciting showing in the second half.

Final Score: 233 Death Track Dolls – 153 Gore Gore Rollergirls

For a more detailed analysis of the game, hit up the Derby Nerd’s game recap, or watch the bout footage on Layer9.

If you missed the game, or want to relive the experience from a different angle and with commentary, our friends from Rogers TV were there and filmed the whole thing! The bouts will be airing on cable channels 10/63 next Saturday (April 20th). Tune in at 8pm to relive the Smoke City Betties vs. the Chicks Ahoy, and later at 10pm you can engross yourself with the Gore Gore Rollergirls vs. the Death Track Dolls. If you’ve never watched their derby broadcast before, it’s pretty damn pro, and you should definitely check it out (preview below).

We’re headed over to Montreal Roller Derby in two weeks to participate in Beast of the East – if you can’t travel with us, you should be able to watch it online via CanuckDerbyTV. On May 11th we’re back in the bunker to see the Gore Gore Rollergirls take on the Chicks Ahoy, while the Smoke City Betties and the Death Track Dolls will try to out-dominate each other on the track.

ToRD and the Bunker of Doom

It will be doom of a sort this coming Saturday as only one team will exit the Bunker with a 2 – 0 streak in the ToRD 2013 season. The Gores and Dolls, both winners of their first games this season, will meet up on the track to decide this fate. Who will keep bragging rights for the next four weeks?

But first, the Chicks Ahoy and Smoke City Betties will hit the track in what is sure to be a good game to watch, as both teams try to earn their first win of the season. Both bouts of the night are sure to be intense, and you won’t want to miss the action!

5pm Doors
6pm Chicks vs Betties
8pm Gores vs Dolls

Tickets are available online and at our usual outlets – as well as our new outlet Sonic Boom, located at 782 Bathurst St (tickets may also be available at the door). Merch, food and beverages will be available for purchase at the event.

Put on your team colours and bring out the family and friends for an action packed night!

UPDATE: The Feisty Jack food truck will be serving up delicious eats during the bouts. If you’re pumped and looking for more action afterwards, head on down to the Velvet Underground for the official after party!

ToRD debuts at 49 on new WFTDA rankings

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat! That’s right sports fans, by the new math-calculated WFTDA ranking system, Toronto Roller Derby is now ranked 49th of all member leagues, placing us in the top-10 of Division 2. How did we accomplish this? Through the awesome might and focus of CN Power! Those ladies in pink and silver have been busting their chops training and competing to showcase ToRD to the world.

For an example of their power, hit up Quad City Chaos this weekend; a two day round robin tournament featuring four WFTDA teams.
